Lehigh recently earned an “A” rating for its campus security programs by Reader’s Digest, which ranked 135 of the nation’s top college campuses. The results of the survey, which placed Lehigh 35th, recognized the university for its efforts to provide a safe and secure campus environment that now includes a text messaging system that could be used to quickly reach members of the campus community in the event of an extreme emergency, as well as a new Emergency Preparedness Web site.
The Lehigh University Police Department is committed to providing a safe and secure environment on and around campus. That commitment is illustrated by a high level of professionalism in the department. It remains one of only two accredited university police departments in the state.
At Lehigh, students, staff, and faculty are partners in creating a safe, secure environment. The university has a full police department, police and student bike patrols, an extensive campus emergency telephone system, walking escorts, shuttle buses and a magnetic card system to enter residence halls.
An Annual Security Report (PDF) provides all students, employees and applicants for admission with current information on programs and procedures. It also provides information on education, prevention, housing safety, policies and safety tips, as well as the TRACS (Take a Ride Around Campus Safely) van service schedule.
Other services that help promote a crime-free community include community police substations on campus and educational programming geared toward student safety.
