Academic Researchers Eye Supply Chain Management

Research carried out at Lehigh helped convince Agere it could speed up the factory planning cycle for its semiconductor assembly and test facilities, according to Chris Armbruster, supply chain strategy director for Agere. The Center for Value Chain Research has a group working on these types of problems, said David Wu, the leader of the center, which is funded by the National Science Foundation. Wu is also professor and chairman of Lehigh’s Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering. “We come in with a small team, a couple of faculty and graduate students typically, and come in with a fresh perspective. In this case, we first built a simulation model,” Wu said. We ran simulations, what are the pros and cons? We build the study and Agere provides real data. Then we present the results of our findings, creating software prototypes, and hand over the tools we developed.”

The campuses of Lehigh University and Moravian College were toured by more than 100 people, including a Japanese delegation, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the sister city partnership between Bethlehem and Tondabayashi, Japan. Bethlehem Mayor John Callahan said the visitors shared notes with Bethlehem officials during an hourlong meeting, toured the campuses, had lunch at the Banana Factory, shopped in Bethlehem and attended a dinner ceremony Monday. The ceremony included the signing of a joint statement marking the anniversary by the mayors and council presidents from both cities, speeches, a musical performance, a 15-minute karate demonstration and the unveiling of a commemorative tile surrounded by four benches -- to be called "Mayors' Green."
