Picasso returns to Zoellner through Saturday

The department of theatre production of Steve Martin’s hit Off-Broadway comedy Picasso at the Lapin Agile resumes its run at Zoellner Arts Center’s Diamond Theater at 8 p.m.Wednesday through Saturday

Directed by Joshua Bombino, Picasso at the Lapin Agile, which opened at the Diamond Theater last weekend, is a fictional account of a meeting between Albert Einstein and Picasso at a small French café, the Lapin Agile, at a time in both men’s lives just before they become famous in their respective fields.

“It’s great to work on a light-hearted and celebrational play like Picasso … It is a pleasure to let loose with Steve Martin. Picasso is a play with a lot of heart, though, and that is what excites me the most about it. Beyond the wild antics of Steve Martin is a simple and beautiful tale of an artist struggling to find his vision,” says Bombino, a fifth-year student and President’s Scholar

“Directing at Lehigh has been a life-changing experience from start to finish, from my first scene in directing class during my sophomore year to mounting a production on the Diamond Theater main stage. I cannot imagine a better way to finish my time off at Lehigh,” Bombino says.

Steve Martin is, according to Internet Movie Database, a “comic who successfully made the transition from a zany stand-up act to ridiculous film comedies to dramatic film roles to leading man status.” He has written six books, and in 1996 won an Outer Critics Circle John Gassner Playwrighting Award for Picasso at the Lapin Agile.

The cast includes 11 Lehigh students: Andrew Rubino (Freddy), Joshua Tonkay (Gaston), Gevevieve Jones (Germaine), Garret Schneider (Albert Einstein), Nicole Sudhaus (Suzanne), Daniel Rank (Sagot), Steve Wojtas (Pablo Picasso), Kasia Voychick (Charles Dabernow Schmendiman), Jane Tarica (Countess), Lauren Difluri (a female admirer) and Matt Reynolds (a visitor).

Tickets are $10. Call 610-758-2787 (7LU-ARTS) or visit Zoellner Ticket Services through Friday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., or two hours before curtain, or order on-line here. Senior, student, LVAIC and group discounts are available.
