Carson speaks on academic privilege at winter commencement

On Sunday, Jan. 12 in Stabler Arena, Bobb Carson, dean of Lehigh’s College of Arts and Sciences and professor of earth and environmental sciences, delivered the winter commencement address on the topic of "Academic Privilege."

"Go forth and do well," Carson said. "Understand your privileged position and your obligation to use your education and your talents for much more than just personal gain. Be proud of your accomplishments at Lehigh, but wear the mantle of that and subsequent success modestly and generously."

There were 132 local residents among the graduating students who, along with students from 31 other states and 10 foreign countries, received degrees at Lehigh’s winter graduation. The students completed their degree requirements during the past summer and fall semester. These included 203 bachelor’s degrees, 199 master’s degrees, and 45 doctoral degrees. Gregory Farrington, Lehigh president, conferred the degrees.
