After more than 16 years with Lehigh, Reunion continues to be a highlight for me, and that certainly was true this year. I enjoyed seeing all the familiar faces and catching up with old friends. The sentiment I heard throughout the weekend was, “No matter where life takes us, Lehigh is what connects us and is the foundation of our success. Coming together and reliving our Lehigh memories is special.”
This year, many new events were well received, indicating that alumni enjoy dynamic educational sessions and quality family-centric activities. Lively discussions filled Baker Auditorium and the Diamond Theatre during several TEDxLehighU panels and four Mountain Talks presentations, including predictions and banter about the 2012 presidential election led by Saladin Ambar, assistant professor of political science. (The Mountain Talks will be archived and available for all alumni on our Mountain Talks site, so check back there in a couple of weeks to hear what you missed.) Music and laughter radiated from the UC lawn during the family-friendly luau and carnival, which featured games, prizes and a trackless train—a kid favorite!
Even the traditional reunion-type gatherings were redefined, such as the tropically themed Reunionfest, the exuberant class receptions and the elegant Brown & White lounge (new this year!). The weekend was packed full of activities for all ages and interests.
The Class of 1962 celebrated its 50th reunion in style, marching in the Parade of Classes with the ‘ABCs of Success’ costumes created by Bernard Gitlin’s (‘62) wife, Brenda. Several members of the Class of 1962 also attended Commencement for their adopted class—the Class of 2012. As his final act as LUAA Board President for 2011-12, Andrew Fiala ’92 welcomed the graduates to the Alumni Association while Bob Downing, Class of 1962 vice president, and Alex Gromadzki, Class of 2012 president, rang the bell.
It’s inspiring to see the newest alumni taking pictures throughout South Mountain with their just-received diplomas. As I see the pride, excitement and the slightest bit of trepidation in their eyes, I know they’re off to accomplish great things, and I look forward to seeing them back for future Reunions, reliving their fondest Lehigh memories.
I encourage you to share your Reunion and Commencement pictures on our Alumni Facebook page. If you weren’t able to join us, we hope to see you next year. Save the date – May 17-19, 2013!
