A Director of LGBTQA (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Questioning and Ally) Services and an office support staff position have been approved for hire, John Smeaton, vice provost for Student Affairs, announced on Wednesday.
A national search for the director position will begin immediately and is expected to be filled by July 1.
“In this new role,” says Smeaton, “the Director of LGBTQA Services will work to promote an environment of affirmation and support for LGBTQA members of the Lehigh community as well as serve as an educator, advocate and campus-wide resource on LGBTQA issues.”
Other duties will include strategic planning, developing retention strategies for and mentoring LGBTQA students, managing the "Rainbow Room" facility, advising the student group SPECTRUM, and working with the LGBTQA Steering Committee, Lehigh Faculty/Staff Affinity group, and the Lehigh University Gay and Lesbian Alumni (LUGALA) group.
The Director of LGBTQA Services will be housed in the Student Affairs division and will report to Sharon Basso, associate vice provost and dean of students.
“The Director of LGBTQA Services will work in close partnership with the Women's Center and the Office of Multicultural Affairs on broad issues of campus diversity and also serves as a resource and liaison for faculty, staff and alumni,” Basso says.
Smeaton adds: “The addition of this critical position reaffirms our commitment to diversity and the value and importance it plays in the core mission, vision, structure and operation both within the Student Affairs division and overall at the university.”
