Inauguration ceremony to feature academic luminaries

The formal ceremony inaugurating Alice P. Gast as Lehigh University’s 13th president will feature distinguished speakers and guests, including several top leaders in higher education from some of the most prestigious universities in the country.

The ceremony at Stabler Arena at 1 p.m. Friday, April 13, is the centerpiece of a three-day event that also includes an Inauguration Symposium on Thursday, April 12, and an Inauguration Family Day of Service on Saturday, April 14.

Among those scheduled to speak at the formal ceremony are Charles M. Vest, president emeritus of MIT; Lawrence S. Bacow, president of Tufts University; and the Rev. Frederick Borsch, professor of New Testament and Chair of Anglican Studies at the Philadelphia Lutheran Theological Seminary.

Vest served as president of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 1990-2004. He has authored two books on higher education and research policy and placed emphasis during his tenure on enhancing undergraduate education, exploring new organizational forms to meet emerging directions in research and education, and building a stronger international dimension into education and research programs, among other areas.

Bacow became Tufts University’s 12th president in 2001. A lawyer and economist whose research focuses on environmental policy, he holds faculty appointments in five departments at Tufts and is a frequent keynote speaker on higher education and environmental issues. Prior to coming to Tufts, Bacow was the Chancellor of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is a member of the Executive Committee of the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities in Massachusetts.

Borsch will provide the Benediction at the inauguration ceremony. He is presently professor of New Testament and Chair of Anglican Studies at the Philadelphia Lutheran Theological Seminary. A frequent contributor of essays, articles and poetry to journals and newspapers, Borsch is the author or editor of 17 books. He has been a conference leader and has lectured at a number of institutions in around the world.

The event will also feature a range of Lehigh dignitaries and community representatives. For a full list of presenters and featured performances, visit the Inauguration Ceremony Web site.
