Washington, Jefferson and Adams would be rolling over in their graves watching the citizens of this Republic endorsing the idea of the government telling them what to eat. The Federal government has zero Constitutional authority to do this. C'mon folks, take responsibility for your own lives! The reason kids are fat now is a combination of many factors. The biggest is that kids are not going out to play with the neighbors kids all afternoon after school (out of fear of predators, they only have carefully arranged "play dates"). They are raised the rest of the time indoors like veal, where they play with computers or watch TV. Often the parents are too tired from work to want to cook nutritional meals, so they order a pizza. When the kids want a snack, they give them a cookie or chips because it is easier to do that than wash and cut up a piece of fruit or a carrot. The solution is for parents (not the government) to take control and make sure their kids get exercise and eat good food. The only area government should be involved with is making sure that school lunches are nutritionally balanced, and in reforming gym class. For overweight kids, gym should not be about playing games, there should be remedial gym devoted to aerobic exercise and weight training. Spend the class on the Nordic Track and lifting weights to burn fat and build muscle. That would turn the live of overweight kids around. Despite my being on the heavy side as a kid, my kids are lean because I control their eating habits, with fruit available as snacks, and I limit the amounts of baked goods, soda and chips that they eat. I make sure they exercise, and limit the time they can spend on the computer and watching TV (hint: dump the cable subscription and use only the antenna channels). Finally they get a home cooked, nutritionally balances meal most nights, even if I have to cook it the night before and warm it in the microwave. It is a little more work, but that is what being a parent is about. Quit giving up your parental control and turning your kids over to the government or our Constitutional Republic is doomed to degenerate into a tyranny.
