My church network has been in partnership with other churches in Port-au-Prince for almost 20 years. We helped purchase a building and land. While we have sent in medical teams to run short-term clinics, much has been done to train intermediate level health care workers from local church who do follow-up and "between visit" care for the patients in the surrounding community. Much success is achieved by working through local leaders and keeping close relations with the local leadership. We sent in an emergency team on a humanitarian flight weeks ago. And as soon as commercial flights resume, I'll be taking in a medical team (hopefully on 6 March). Obviously, the type of medical care will be significantly different on this trip. We currently have electronic records for almost 1500 patients from the surrounding community. We are always interested in finding the most effective way to enhance the health and welfare of the Haitian people. We have already raised almost $50,000 in our church alone, and we are not done. It will be spent at the most local level possible, on the most critical needs, through people with whom we have relationship. I hope the LU community is capable of raising much more. - An alumni
