Katherine and William Beattie 1959
William G. Beattie is a 1959 graduate of Lehigh University where he majored in metallurgical engineering. He also holds the M.B.A. from the University of Pittsburgh. Following his graduation, Beattie worked for Union Carbide in various marketing and management positions, including regional director of Union Carbide Southern Africa. In 1986, he formed Strategic Minerals Corporation (Stratcor), a privately owned mining and metals company. The company, a leading producer of vanadium products for the worldwide steel, titanium and chemical industries, was sold to Evraz Groups in 2006. Beattie was chairman of the company.
Beattie has maintained a close relationship with the Lehigh since his graduation. Two of his three children and their spouses are Lehigh graduates. Michael Beattie and his wife, Laurel, are members of the Class of 1988. Daughter Elizabeth Ann and her husband Matt Wylie are Class of 1993. Daughter Vicki is a missionary.
Beattie was a scholarship recipient as a student attending Lehigh. The Beatties support the Strategic Minerals Scholarship which supports students studying chemical and materials engineering, as well as the STAR Academy, which pairs Lehigh mentors with at-risk middle and high school students. They also endowed the Beattie Scholars program for at-risk students and support and sustain the Access and Success Fund.
Today, Katherine and Bill Beattie live in Connecticut and summer in Nantucket. They are active members of the Walnut Hill Community Church.
