Sue and Eugene Mercy, Jr. 1959

Sue and Eugene Mercy, Jr.Eugene Mercy, Jr. graduated from Lehigh University in 1959, and went on to serve as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army. From 1961-1964, Mercy was associated with Halle and Stieglitz. In 1964, he joined Goldman Sachs & Co. in the securities sales department. In 1968, became vice president of the securities sales and equity trading departments. He was elected a general partner in 1971.
 
Mercy had a successful 25-year career with Goldman Sachs. He became a limited partner in 1988 and a limited partner of the Goldman Sachs Group, L.P. in 1989. In 1996, he was appointed to the Goldman Sachs Limited Partner Advisory Committee and in May 1999, he became a senior director of Goldman Sachs Group Inc. Mercy is now serves as a principal in Granite Capital International Group, which he founded after leaving Goldman Sachs in 1991.

In 1988, Mercy was awarded the "L-in-Life" award by the Lehigh New York Alumni Club. Mercy served on the board of trustees at Lehigh, where he chaired the development committee from 1995-2000, and was a member of the executive committee, and the committees for academic affairs, nominating, and cultural affairs committees. Vice chairman of the board until 1999, he is now a trustee emeritus.

Mercy was formerly vice chairman of the board of The Loomis Chaffee School, vice chairman of the board of Beth Israel Medical Center and a trustee of Continuum Health Partners, Inc. Mercy also serves on the Committee for Rare Books and Prints of the Museum of Modern Art, as vice president of New York Services for the Handicapped, as a member of the New York City School Volunteers Advisory Committee and is a board member and member of the Executive Committee of Seeds of Peace, Public Color.

Mercy's wife, Sue, passed away in February 2010. She was an active member of the Board of Directors at the New York Philharmonic, and also a Trustee Emeritus of Connecticut College.
