Ada E. and Peter C. Rossin 1948*

Ada E. and Peter C. RossinPeter C. Rossin graduated from Lehigh University in 1948 with a bachelor’s degree in metallurgical engineering, after having served as a pilot in the U.S. Air Force during World War II.  He earned a master’s degree in engineering from Yale University while working at Remington Arms Corporation.

Rossin held management positions with General Electric Company, Cyclops Corporation, Fansteel Metallurgical Corporation, and Crucible Steel Corporation. He founded Dynamet, Inc. in 1967. The company found new uses for titanium-alloy products used in the aerospace, chemical, medical, and petroleum industries and grew to employ 425 staff in five states. In 1989, President George H.W. Bush named Rossin the “Small Business Person of the Year.”

In 1997, Rossin sold the company to Carpenter Technology Corporation. That same year, Rossin made a gift of $25 million to name Lehigh’s Peter C. Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Sciences. In 1999, Rossin received an honorary degree from Lehigh. He received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Lehigh Department of Materials Science and Engineering in 2000. Rossin passed away in 2003. His wife, Ada, lives in Pittsburgh and continues to generously support the university.
