Easton artist Marvin Simmons has created a limited edition print for alumni and friends of Lehigh who become members of the Asa Packer Society in the 2013 fiscal year. The prints will be presented to everyone who joined the society between July 1, 2012, and June 30, 2013, as a special thanks for their support and commitment.
The silkscreened print includes allusions to Asa Packer, the University Center, and Linderman Library, as well as references to technology, discovery, and creativity. The images, ranging from a library chair to an acorn, collectively represent the power and impact of society members, whose generosity provides the seed for Lehigh’s growth, strength, and influence.
Marvin Simmons ’82P ’89P was a graphic designer for Lehigh University for 36 years before he retired in 2006. He continues to work on special projects for the university.
Simmons has been creating award-winning works of art that are recognized around the world for more than 40 years. He is noted for his distinctive artistic vision to create prints that have chronicled the visits of a long line of distinguished guests at Lehigh. These include former U.S. Senator George Mitchell (who led the Northern Ireland Peace negotiations), Nobel Peace Prize winners Bishop Desmond Tutu and Elie Wiesel, as well as former presidents, prime ministers and international leaders. His works have also graced the Hiroshima Peace Prints and the Aids (H.I.V.) prints for the Shoshin Society, and also created a print for His Holiness the Dalai Lama when he visited Lehigh in 2008.
Simmons received Lehigh’s Paul J. Franz Award in 1997. He earned a B.A. in Sociology from Juniata College and a B.F.A. and M.F.A. from Yale University.
This print is intended to be the first in a series, which society members would be able to collect through the coming years.
Membership in the Asa Packer Society begins at $1,000. All annual and capital gifts, as well as matching gifts, are counted toward membership.
