Letter to alumni: Best of the best

Classes are back in session and we have welcomed the incoming Class of 2017 at the new student Rally. I would like to give a shout out to everyone who participated in this event virtually through our social media accounts on Facebook and Twitter. If you were unable to attend the Rally you can still experience it online!

The kick-off of the new school year means that our football team is gearing up for a new season. Keep an eye on number 20, Keith Sherman. Keith interned with the Alumni Relations team this summer and was a great asset. Keith is a team captain and a running back for the Mountain Hawks, and we are all looking forward to seeing him on the field this year as a senior. The final week of preseason camp has concluded and the football team had a successful second scrimmage before classes began. The season-opener against Central Connecticut State is set for Goodman Stadium on Saturday, September 7, at 12:30 p.m.

This is an exciting year for Lehigh football. We are proud to have three alumni in the NFL! Ryan Spadola ′13 is getting a lot of buzz as a walk-on for the Jets. Spadola emerged from the recent Jets-Giants game with a fourth-quarter touchdown and a 70-yard catch that led to a field goal in overtime. Additionally, former Lehigh Linebacker #41, Billy Boyko ’13, is in the NFL as #54, a linebacker for the Oakland Raiders. Will Rackley ’11, was a four-year starter for Lehigh and now plays for the Jacksonville Jaguars as offensive guard #65.

Lehigh has much to celebrate. Show your spirit and cheer on the Brown & White at one of our pre-game tailgate events in support of the football team. We are always working to bring Lehigh to areas beyond South Mountain, and as such we have a number of regional tailgates planned for the season. I encourage you to join alumni, family, and friends at a tailgate this fall! Even if you are unable to attend an event in person, there are many outstanding virtual events available. You can even participate in webinars using mobile apps for your smartphone.  Lehigh University’s Online Community has a wealth of information on our virtual events, so make sure you visit us online!

Some of you may have noticed that I am also on Twitter. As I attend events and meet with people in the Lehigh Community, I invite you to follow me on Twitter: @LUWolfenden.  My goal is to share my thoughts and photographs of these incredible experiences with the LU Family.

Sincerely,
Robert W. Wolfenden
Assistant Vice President for Alumni Relations
