Seeing things not for what they are, but for what they might be Otis Hackney '06G was hired to turn around South Philadelphia High, a school notorious for student conflict. Hearing 19 different languages in the school halls can do that. His leadership and passion have led to a new academic mindset, a less segregated environment—and a culture of respect.
innovation

where passion meets possibility Lisa Boyd '10 had long been interested in sustainable water access, but she never imagined living in Tanzania. Or learning Kiswahili. Or founding JamiiWater, a non- profit that helped six villages in the Dodoma region repair their broken water systems. Her inspiring story is changing the way we think about privatization of community resources.

camaraderie of competition Lineman Tom Ruley '13 spent his college career thinking about his last battle with rival Lafayette. But when he realized he couldn't excel on the field because of an injury, he took himself out of the game after the first few snaps. Taking one for the team had its rewards—his composure and selfless attitude helped spark Lehigh's 38-21 win.

individually we are strong, together we are genius James Peterson thinks a change of perspective can do a lot of good. As Lehigh’s director of Africana Studies, Peterson is building a cross-disciplinary team of researchers whose interest spans each of our colleges. leading means more than fighting your way up the board room Lehigh students may go on to accomplish great things, but it’s their work in South Bethlehem that really has us impressed. Every year, they spend about 8,500 hours tutoring children from across the community. That’s time out of the classroom well spent.

introducing dreams to reality Soccer may be "The Beautiful Game" and the world’s most popular sport, but Ben Gucciardi ’05, ’06G knows that even soccer has its limits. As founder of Soccer Without Borders, Ben gives disadvantaged children all over the world an avenue for positive engagement and personal growth, regardless of their station in life.

At Lehigh, collaboration comes naturally. Students work together across disciplines, years and nationalities. Student teams have designed many of our athletic facilities through the Integrated Learning Experience. In the Integrated Product Development program, interdisciplinary teams tackle real-world projects provided by industry partners. And the Global Village for Future Leaders of Business and Industry gathers young adults from around the world to learn to work together.
