Executive panel encourages working abroad

It was a packed house in Rauch Business Center as students, faculty and staff gathered to hear a panel discussion about how to navigate global leadership challenges. The panel, “Connecting Our Worlds: The Global Marketplace,” featured executives from multinational corporations. It was sponsored by Lehigh’s College of Business and Economics and Office of International Affairs.

Richard Boocock, vice president of global operations at Air Products, spoke about his experiences overseeing global information technology in Europe and serving as vice president of the company’s Tonnage Gases Europe and Middle East division. He reminded students hoping to work abroad to be to be ethical, humble and respectful, as well as knowledgeable.

The group then heard from Ylber Dauti, a principal of the Dauti Law Firm who is also a duly licensed attorney-at-law in Albania (non-practicing) and a duly licensed Solicitor of England and Wales (non-practicing). He spoke about how, even in the heyday of social media, it’s essential for people to make personal connections. Those one-on-one interactions make professionals stand out in the crowd.

Finally, Sandi Klose, the global head of operations, investors at Thomson Reuters, discussed her experiences working in Hong Kong, where she headed Customer Segments and Product Development in Asia for Thomson Financial.

Today, said Klose, industries are most eager to give opportunities to work abroad to young professionals in the early stages of their careers, in part because it’s less expensive to transfer them.

The event was an opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students to learn about what it’s like to live and work in a different culture. It was intended not just for American students who would like to work in a different country, but also for international students who plan to remain in the United States after they graduate from Lehigh.

The event was also attended by Executive MBA students from the University of Nottingham, England, who were participating in an MBA academic exchange with Lehigh.

“We live in a global economy where even the most promising job candidates face competition from peers around the world,” says Paul Brockman, the college’s associate dean for global initiatives and Joseph R. Perella and Amy M. Perella Chair of Finance.

“Therefore, it’s essential that all of our students gain international experiences during their time at Lehigh so that they are more knowledgeable, adaptable, and competitive in the job market. This event gave students a taste of that international experience.”
