Program Director Welcome

Welcome to our website for the LEHIGH Masters of Science in Economics (MS ECO). I invite you to carefully go through the rest of our website to learn more about our program, and I’d like to take the opportunity now to highlight a few of the program’s features by answering a few questions you might have about it:

How many students are admitted to the program?
Normally, we admit about 10-15 students each year. So it naturally follows that you are going to be in small classes with a great opportunity to have close interaction with your professors.

What’s a normal course load in the MS ECO program?
Most students take either three (3) or four (4) courses per term. Students who are working as half-time GAs (graduate assistants) are allowed to take no more than three (3) courses per term. Students for whom English is not their native language are also usually advised to take no more than three (3) courses per term.

Must I take one of the various “tracks” or “emphases?”
No. The tracks or emphases are simply listed to provide guidance for those students who might like to concentrate or specialize in certain areas of economics. They also provide students with a wider range of elective courses that would otherwise not be possible. If you are thinking about selecting a certain emphasis or track, be sure to see me early in the program. Some courses in the tracks (like mathematics and finance) might require that you take certain prerequisite courses.

What types of jobs do MS ECO graduates get?
The list of jobs and employers that our recent MS ECO graduates have taken is quite varied. Some have taken consulting positions or jobs at banks and investment firms; some have taken positions in state or federal government; and still other have gone on to PhD programs.

I hope that you find this information helpful. And if you have any other questions that you do not find answered here or elsewhere on our website, please give me a call.

Choosing to come to Lehigh will give you a wonderful opportunity to learn from professors who are not only widely recognized in their fields of research, but who are excellent instructors as well. These advantages, coupled with the fact that our program attracts students from all around the globe, make coming to Lehigh a wise decision.

Sincerely,
Robert J. Thornton
