Clifford White '82
Partner, SWaN Investors
Mr. White graduated from Lehigh’s College of Business & Economics in 1982 with a B.S. in Accounting. While at Lehigh he was active in his fraternity, Sigma Alpha Mu, as its Vice President and then Treasurer, and on campus in the Brown & White as its Business Manager during his junior and senior years.
In the summer after graduation Mr. White passed the CPA exam and started his career in the audit department at Deloitte Haskins & Sells (DH&S) in New York City. During his four years at DH&S he was ultimately responsible for managing the field work on the Bank of New York and Mitsubishi International Corporation audits after experiencing audits on a diverse group of companies and organizations.
In August of 1986 he joined fellow Lehigh graduate Fred Schaufeld as a founding partner and the financial architect of NEW Customer Service Companies, Inc. (NEW), now the nation’s leading provider of extended service plans and buyer protection programs for consumer products. Founded in 1983, with headquarters now in Sterling, Va., the company grew from 5 employees when Cliff joined to over 6,000 during his tenure. In 2008 NEW merged with Asurion Corporation, the largest provider of protection plans on cellular phones, to form NEW Asurion Corporation, and create the world leader in providing award-winning post-sale consumer care for leading retailers, consumer service providers, wireless carriers and financial services firms in the United States, Canada, China, Japan, Turkey and the United Kingdom.
Currently along with Mr. Schaufeld and another founding member of NEW they are partners in SWaN Investors, a private investment fund with over two dozen widely diversified investments in real estate, private equity and venture capital funds, a variety of growth oriented companies, and four professional sports teams including the Washington Nationals (MLB), the Washington Wizards (NBA), the Washington Capitals (NHL) and the Washington Mystics (WNBA).
Mr. White is active on the Board of the Community Foundation of Montgomery County, where he and his wife Debbie have their family’s donor advised fund. In addition to his board duties, he is also on the foundation's Sharing Montgomery Grants Committee and is the founder and co-chair of the foundation's Neighbors in Need Montgomery Fund (a fund established in response to the economic downturn that is focused on helping those in the county who are in dire need of housing, food and employment).
Mr. and Mrs. White are also donors and members of Venture Philanthropy Partners, an innovative philanthropic organization that makes investments in high-performing nonprofit organizations, with dynamic leaders and missions that serve children and youth of low-income families in the National Capital region.
In addition, Mr. White has been the Treasurer of his church, St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church in Bethesda, MD, since 2006 and a member of its Vestry since 2004.
Mr. White and his family reside in Potomac, Maryland where Debbie is very active in the neighborhood community and they are raising their two children.
