Information for Graduates
146th Spring Commencement Weekend
Sunday, May 18, and Monday, May 19, 2014
It may be of interest, and also of help, for you to know some of the details involved with the formal ceremonies for University Day Commencement.
Please arrive at Goodman Campus in appropriate academic regalia and report to the playing fields on the EAST side of Goodman Stadium by 8:45 a.m. Faculty ushers, who will be wearing bright gold hats, will be able to assist you with assembly and instructions. You must check in at the card distribution tables for your specific college.
You will be given two cards listing your name, degree(s), and major(s). On these cards, you may indicate how your name should be pronounced if it is not obvious.
You will lineup behind the sign indicating your college, degree category and portion of the alphabet, in alphabetical order.
If there are problems with the cap, gown or hood, bookstore representatives will be there to assist you.
The procession will leave the assembly area promptly at 9:45 a.m.
Please note: The ceremony will begin at 10:00 a.m. sharp. Late arrivals will be seated by ushers.
The Candidates, led by the ushers, will enter Goodman Stadium in four columns from the north end of the stadium at 10:00 a.m. Chalk lines on the roadway, traffic cones and staff personnel will assist in keeping the lines separated and single file. During the Processional, caps should be worn with the tassel on the RIGHT. Chairs and water for the degree candidates are on the playing field. Remain standing until the entire Procession has entered.
The Processional will move into the stadium in the following order:
- Colors and Color Guard
- Assistant Marshal
- Degree Candidates
- University Marshal
- University Mace Bearer
- Presidential Party and Commencement Speaker

The Processional is over when the Presidential Party, composed of the University Officials, Commencement Speaker and Honorary Degree Recipients are standing on the stage. The Commencement Exercises will then begin.
Commencement Exercises, Conferring of Degrees and Diploma Distribution
An Invocation will begin the Exercises, followed by the singing of the National Anthem. During this time, the entire audience is standing, caps removed. After the National Anthem, everyone will be seated.
Following the introductory remarks, a selected graduate student will give remarks, followed by the president of the senior class. President Gast will introduce the commencement speaker, who will then give the address.
The president will then introduce the provost, Dr. Patrick Farrell, who will introduce the Honorary Degree Recipients and read a brief biographical sketch on each. Deans will then present the recipients to President Gast who confers the degree. President Gast then gives her remarks.
Conferring of Degrees
The degrees will be conferred and diplomas distributed in the following order:
The dean of the respective college will ask the candidates for the degree to rise and then the president will confer the degree. The candidates will be led forward, in alphabetical order, by the ushers. You will present one card to the reader at either the left or right side of the stage who will announce your name as you quickly go up the steps and receive congratulations from either the dean or the president. At this time your photograph will be taken by a commercial photographer. You will leave the stage by the CENTER steps and proceed down the aisle to the tents at the rear where, upon presentation of your second card, you will receive your diploma. You may now move the tassel on your cap to the LEFT and return to your seat.
The president will then recognize all those who have received honors, prizes and awards and will invite them to rise.
The Exercises then close with remarks from the Lehigh University Alumni Association President, the Benediction, and the Alma Mater.You are requested to remain in your seat until all degrees have been awarded, all diplomas distributed and the ceremony is concluded.
The departure from the stadium will be led by the colors and color guard followed in turn by the Marshal, the Mace Bearer, the Presidential Party and the Faculty. All new graduates must stand in their place until the Faculty have cleared the last row of chairs. The ceremony is then officially over.
Return of Academic Caps, Gowns and Hoods
Following the ceremony, the Bookstore cap & gown return area will be located in the Student Assembly area next to Goodman Stadium. Please return regalia within one hour of the ending of the ceremony.
Regalia may also be returned to the Bookstore in Campus Square - open until 5:00PM.
- Access to the Stadium field will not be permitted during the ceremony for families and guests.
- No alcoholic beverages or smoking will be permitted.
- Please remain in your seats until the ceremony is concluded.
- Cell phones must be turned off during the ceremony.
